GLVC Western-division leader University of Missouri-St. Louis hit a running shot with nine seconds left to edge Jewell on Thursday night 69-68.
Troy Long took the ball into the lane and hit a running, falling sideways shot to give UMSL the lead. A
Craig Mattson drive from halfcourt down the left side of the lane in the final seconds ended with the ball and Mattson skittering out of bounds with under a second remaining, and UMSL was able to inbound the ball successfully to end the game.
The Cardinals trailed early in the game by 12 and 13 points, but were only down at half 34-28. UMSL held double-digit leads at different times during the second half, but Jewell came back to take a five point lead with under four minutes to play. Two key Cardinal turnovers late in the game against the Triton press gave UMSL a chance for the late rally.
Nick Larson scored 24 points for the Cardinals before fouling out with 36 seconds remaining.
Chris Uz was 4-8 from behind the -three-point arc in scoring 16 points. Mattson had 11 points and 5 rebounds.
