William Jewell men's basketball came close to knocking off GLVC Western Division leading Missouri-St. Louis Saturday at the Mabee Center, but in the end the pressure defense and athleticism of the Tritons prevailed 67-62.
The Cardinals led by seventeen points twice in the second half. UMSL (15-6, 10-3 in GLVC play) cut one lead down to nine before Jewell (7-12, 4-9) ran the lead back to 17. The Cardinals committed 20 turnovers in the game, many of them late in the second half, compared to 12 Triton miscues.
Jewell led 27-24 at the halftime break.
Nick Larson scored 23 for the Cards and snatched 19 rebounds.
Chris Uz hit four three pointers and had 14 points, and
Mark Mason added 11.
After winning two of three at home, Jewell now goes on the road to face Illinois-Springfield on Thursday night and Quincy University on Saturday afternoon.
