The William Jewell College baseball team was swept by fellow Great Lakes Valley Conference foe University of Wisconsin-Parkside by scores of 18-8 and 5-2 on Saturday at Jack Talley Stadium in Liberty, Mo.
In game one, the Cardinals jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as
Clark O'Dowd hit a two-out triple then scored on a wild pitch.
The Rangers then answered with five in the sixth, and seven in the seventh to break the game open. Jewell did plate five in the bottom of the seventh but it was too little too late for the Cardinals.
Drew Mitrisin (1-3) took the loss for Jewell tossing four and two-thirds giving up six hits and six runs (four earned) while walking three and striking out 8.
Tom Herrera had a pinch hit triple that drove in three runs for Jewell and catcher
Willie Gaball went two for four with two runs scored.
In game two, the Cardinals received a solid pitching effort out of
Cody Downing but the Rangers were able to score one in the first, two in the third and two more in the seventh for the 5-2 win.
Downing (0-1) went six innings giving up seven hits and five runs while walking four and striking out six.
Offensively,
Kaleb Shaw went two for three with a run scored and
David Smith went one for two with an RBI.
The Cardinals, 7-7 on the year will take on Lewis University on Sunday, March 18 at 12:00 p.m. at Jack Talley Stadium on the Jewell Campus in Liberty, Mo.
