The William Jewell Cardinals swept the University of Sioux Falls in a double header on Friday at Jack Talley Stadium in Liberty, Mo., on Friday by scores of 3-0 and 4-1.
In game one the Cardinals used a strong pitching performance from
David Collins (2-1) who pitched the shutout while keeping the Cougars off balance the entire game. Collins allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out 9.
Offensively the Cardinals scored one in the bottom of the first.
JP Bartmess led off the inning with a single then advanced to second on a passed ball. He then advanced to third on a sacrifice to deep center field and scored on a ground ball to deep second.
The Cards then scored two more in the bottom of the third. After
Alex Backhaus struck out,
Bryan Rezin was hit by a pitch. Rezin then stole second base and advanced to third on a base hit by Bartmess. Bartmess then stole second base and
Kaleb Shaw struck out. With two outs,
David Smith walked to load the bases. Tommy Herrera sent a pop fly toward the first base side and Herrera collided with Cougar first baseman Austin Goodenow which allowed the ball to drop and Rezin and Bartmess scored on the play to give the Cardinals the 3-0 advantage that would hold up the rest of the game.
Bartmess led the Cardinals offense going two for two with a walk, a stolen base and two runs scored.
Brady Nolz (0-2) took the loss for Sioux Falls pitching six innings allowing four hits, three runs while walking three and striking out four.
In game two the Cardinals used another strong pitching performance as first-year pitcher
Preston Felgate (2-1) tossed six innings giving up six hits, one run while giving up one walk and striking out six.
The Cardinals got on the board first in the bottom of the third as
JP Bartmess got things started with a lead out double.
Kaleb Shaw singled home Bartmess and advanced to second on the high throw home.
David Smith's double scored Shaw and Shaw was able to advance to second when
Clarke O'Dowd was hit by a pitch after one out. Shaw and O'Dowd then executed a successful double steal and Shaw was able to score on a deep groundout to shortstop to make it 3-0.
The Cougars were able to pull within two in the top of the fourth. Anthony Davis led off the inning with a single and after a stolen base scored off a double from Brennden Ward.
Jewell scored an insurance run in the sixth as
Tommy Thornton scored off a single from
Kaleb Shaw.
Sophomore
Blaze Carano closed the door on the Cougars in the top of the seventh with a one, two, three inning.
Kaleb Shaw went three for four with two RBI's and Bartmess collected two more hits and a run scored for Jewell.
The Cardinals, 6-4 on the year, will play another double header with Sioux Falls on Saturday, March 10 at 12:00 p.m. at Jack Talley Stadium on the Jewell campus in Liberty, Mo.
