The William Jewell College baseball team won a 3-2 squeaker over University of St. Mary on Tuesday afternoon at Jack Talley Stadium on the Jewell campus in Liberty, Mo.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 2-0 lead with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings respectively. St. Mary tied things up with single runs of their own in the sixth and seventh innings.
In the bottom of the seventh the Cards were able to load the bases and
Alex Backhaus was able to draw a bases loaded walk to bring home
Willie Gaball for the winning run.
Trevor Bowden (1-0) pitched five scoreless innings only allowing one hit and striking out two.
Backhaus finished the game one for two with two RBI's and two walks.
JP Bartmess finished two for four with a run scored and a walk.
The Cardinals, 14-17 on the year, will return to GLVC action on Saturday as they travel to Springfield, Mo., to take on Drury University 12:00 p.m.
