Cards Split Doubleheader with Druy

The William Jewell College baseball team split their Saturday doubleheader with Drury University dropping game one 10-7 and winning the nightcap 6-2.

The Panthers jumped out to an early lead scoring one in the second and three in the third.  The Cards answered back with a single run in the fourth before Drury scored three more in the bottom of the fourth.  Drury took a 10-3 lead heading into the ninth as the Cards tried to mount a comeback but came up three runs short.

Drew Mitrisin (2-4) was saddled with the loss giving up seven earned runs on 11 hits in five innings, while fanning one.

Willie Gaball led the Cardinals offensively going three for three with two RBI's and a run scored.  Clark O'Dowd finished two for four with an RBI and run scored. 

In the nightcap, Jewell jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first off a two-run homer by Bryan Rezin.   Drury answered back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the second.  David Smith smacked an RBI triple in the top of the third to help the Cardinals reclaim the lead and Drew Mitrisin doubled to drive in Smith to put the Cards up 4-2. 

Jewell scored two more in the top of fourth as JP Bartmess hit an RBI single and after a stolen base scored on a single by Rezin.  The Cards were able to keep Drury at bay the rest of the game. 

David Collins (4-4) got the win for Jewell after holding Drury to just two runs, two earned, on six hits in six and a third innings. 

Rezin finished the game three for four with three RBI's and two runs scored while Smith finished two for four with an RBI and a run scored.

The Cardinals, 15-18 on the year will continue their series with Drury tomorrow with another doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m. in Springfield, Mo.
