Baseball Splits With UMSL to Start Four Game Set

Game 1 Box Score

Game 2 Box Score

The Jewell baseball team split a doubleheader with Missouri-St. Louis on Friday, winning the nine-inning opener 4-2 and dropping the seven-inning nightcap 6-0.

The Cardinals (13-15, 6-10 GLVC) will host UMSL (12-16, 5-11)  twice Saturday beginning at noon at Fred Flook Field.  Both games can be heard live on the WJC Sports Network starting at 11:40.

Jewell fell behind 1-0 in the third inning of game one before scoring two runs in the fifth.  Brian Rezin doubled in the inning, and scored on Tom Herrara's double a batter later.  Herrarra scored from second on a wild pitch that the UMSL catcher couldn't locate after it bounced off his shin guard, sliding in just ahead of the throw by by the pitcher.

The Cardinals gave up another run in the eighth inning, but came back with two more of their own in the bottom of the frame, scoring on Tommy Thornton's double and a bunt by J. P. Bartmess.

Blaze Carano, pitching the last two innings and retiring all six of the hitters he faced, picked up the win on the mound for the Cardinals.

In game two, Jewell was only outhit by UMSL 8-6 but couldn't get hits at the right time and were slowed by two Triton double plays in the seven inning game.  Clark O'Dowd and Scotty Scott had doubles for Jewell.
