The William Jewell College women's tennis team outdueled the Crusaders of Evangel University earlier today by a score of 5-4. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 4-0 overall in the spring season; while Evangel falls to 0-1 on the year.
The match began with doubles play, as Jewell took two of the three flights. The tandem of
Hana Lindbloom and
Jaimie Baker made quick work of Phine Mulumba and Karley Roland 8-1 at No. 3 doubles. Evangel got on the board as Amy Grossklag and Ali Sivinski downed
Kristen Stivers and
Katy Lehenbauer 8-2 at No. 1 doubles. The duo of Conner and
Loree Hazelrigg edged out the team of Jenna Elliot and Kelly Bush 8-6 at No. 2 doubles.
The Cards quickly took a 3-1 lead when first-year player
Savannah Drew defeated Kelly Bush 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. Evangel would storm back as Grossklag beat Stivers 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, Elliot bested Lindbloom 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles and Sivinski got by Lehenbauer 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.
With the Crusaders hanging on to a 4-3 lead, the match came down to the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches. Senior
Carli Bisesi easily took care of her opponent Roland, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles and
Loree Hazelrigg handled her opponent and clinched the match deciding win at No. 5 singles by a score of 6-1, 6-0.
“We went up 3-1 rather quickly, but Evangel really made us work for that fifth point,” said head coach
Paul Worstell. “I'm very proud of the way we competed today and this was truly a team win for us.”
Jewell will be back on the courts on Friday, March 1 as the Cardinals will be on the road to take on the University of Nebraska-Kearney. The match is slated for a 2:00 pm start time.
