Cardinals Drop One-Point Game to End Season

Box Score The Cardinal women's basketball season came to a close in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Deaconess GLVC Women's Basketball Championships with a 62-61 loss to Maryville University.

The Cardinals had a chance to pull the game out of the fire in the final seconds, but a Jessica Wheeler three-pointer was short from the top of the key, and a Chelsea Meeks desperation shot was wide and short at the buzzer.

Katlyn Wood ended her senior season at Jewell with 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Cassy Nicolay had 12 points and 13 rebounds.  Rose Hof also had 13 for the Cardinals, who finish the year at 18-10.

As close as the score was, the statistics from the game were close as well. Jewell shot 35% from the field in the game, while Maryville shot 32%.  The Saints had one more made field goal and one more made three-pointer than Jewell, while the Cardinals hit two more free throws in the game.  Jewell turned the ball over 15 times to Maryville's 12, but the Cardinals outrebounded the Saints 44 to 42.

The game was tied at 33 at the half.  Jewell's biggest lead was eight points with 13:50 left in the game, and Maryville held their biggest lead of nine points with only 5:20 left to play.  The Cardinals took a momentary 61-60 lead with 28.9 seconds left before Maryville's Samantha Robison hit two free throws to provide the winning margin with 12 seconds left.

Maryville (18-9) moves on to face Kentucky Wesleyan College in the semi-finals on Saturday.
